What’s in an Old Fashioned Apple co*cktail?

A traditional Old Fashioned co*cktail is made by muddling sugar and bitters, mixing it with (bourbon) whiskey, and then adding citrus rind. To make this apple-infused fall version of the classic co*cktail, we are making a few changes. We are adding in apple cider and apple butter, plus finishing it off with a garnish of cinnamon to give it the final fall kick it needs.

FAQs

Apple Butter Old Fashioned co*cktail Recipe - The Cookie Rookie®? ›

Use Rich Simple Syrup

The sugar cube is one Old Fashioned tradition that can definitely be skipped. While many recipes call for it, it offers no advantage over using a rich simple syrup and has several disadvantages. Most obviously, you have to find and buy sugar cubes and a muddler.

Is an Old Fashioned better with simple syrup or sugar cube?

Is an Old Fashioned better with whiskey or bourbon? ›

The Old Fashioned template is simple and broad enough that it will work with almost any style of whiskey. With that said, bourbon is often the go-to whiskey choice for an Old Fashioned.

What's the difference between a Manhattan and an Old Fashioned? ›

Both co*cktails call for whisky and Angostura bitters, but the defining factor lies in their sweetening agents. The Old Fashioned opts for straightforward sugar or syrup, helping to soften the whisky. In contrast the Manhattan favours a sweet vermouth – adding fruity and caramel flavours into the mix.

How long should you stir an Old Fashioned for? ›

Two healthy dashes will do the trick. Chocolate or walnut bitters work well in this drink if you can find them. I also like Dale DeGroff's pimento bitters. Technique: The most balanced Old Fashioned is made by stirring the drink with ice for about 20 to 30 seconds and then straining that mix over fresh ice.

What's the best sugar to use in an Old Fashioned? ›

1 cube of Angostura soaked sugar cube: Brown Demerara sugar cubes work well in an Old Fashioned co*cktail. The classic recipe, according to most mixologists, calls for Brown Demerara sugar cubes. Sugar cubes are previously measured, allowing for consistent whiskey to bitters ratios.

What is the best alcohol to make an Old Fashioned with? ›

Whiskey: A classic old-fashioned co*cktail is traditionally made with bourbon or rye whiskey. I recommend a high-proof bourbon with bold flavor notes, so that its flavor will not be overpowered by the orange and bitters. Bitters: Angostura bitters are most commonly used in this co*cktail.

Is Crown Royal whiskey good for Old Fashioned? ›

I focused my tasting on American whiskeys, stressing a balance between familiar bottles and less-famous ones that are well worth space on your shelf, though there are any number of fantastic rye-forward Canadian whiskeys that make great Old Fashioned co*cktails, such as Crown Royal and Alberta Premium.

What are the best bitters for an Old Fashioned? ›

Angostura makes perhaps the most ubiquitous bitters bottles out there, one that you'll see in nearly every bar - and one that you should have in your co*cktail arsenal at home. This reddish-brown bitters provides a fragrant bouquet of fruits and spices, and it's an essential ingredient for any classic Old Fashioned.

What's stronger, Negroni or Old Fashioned? ›

Old-Fashioned — (38.09%, 2.44oz in volume, 0.93oz alcohol) Bloody Mary — (12%, 7.5oz in volume, 0.9oz alcohol) Negroni — (20.13%, 4oz in volume, 0.81oz alcohol)

Do you put vermouth in an Old Fashioned? ›

Old Fashioneds are made with Bourbon or Rye whiskey, Angostura Bitters and sugar (or simple syrup.) The key difference between the two is the sweetener – and it makes all the difference! The Manhattan uses Sweet Vermouth and the Old Fashioned uses plain sugar. Sweet Vermouth is a type of aromatized fortified wine.

What drink is similar to an Old Fashioned? ›

Sazerac. The Sazerac is probably the closest drink to an Old Fashioned, that isn't an Old Fashioned. So if you like one, bets are you'll like the other. A traditional Old Fashioned uses bourbon, while a Sazerac uses rye whisky which makes it more peppery.

How many dashes of bitters are in an Old Fashioned? ›

An Old Fashioned calls for two to three dashes of bitters—no more, no less—that are added to the glass once the sugar or simple syrup is in. While the amount seems small, having too many or too few dashes can dramatically change the taste makeup of the drink. The type and quality of bitters matters too.

How to make an Old Fashioned taste better? ›

  1. Add 4-6 dashes of aromatic bitters.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of Demerara syrup.
  3. Pour 2 ounces of whiskey. (or any other spirit you like!)
  4. Stir with ice until chilled.
  5. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
  6. Gently express an orange peel over the top of the drink.
  7. Old Fashioned. 2 oz spirit. 1 teaspoon sugar syrup.

Do you muddle the orange in an Old Fashioned? ›

Be very conservative with the water at the end. Muddle carefully in the bottom of an old fashioned glass the sugar, Angostura, one orange, one cherry, and a splash of soda. Remove the orange rind and add Bourbon, ice, and soda or water. Garnish with a fresh orange slice and a cherry.

Why use simple syrup instead of sugar? ›

Simple syrup is used to allow sugar to be evenly mixed throughout a drink, particularly one served cold, by pre-dissolving the granulated sugar in water ahead of time to avoid clumping. It's also one of the easiest ingredients to make yourself—if you can boil water, you can make simple syrup.

What kind of ice cube for Old Fashioned? ›

The right style of ice depends on the co*cktail. For spirit-forward drinks served in a rocks glass, like the Negroni or Old Fashioned, a single large block or sphere is ideal. For a tall drink like a highball or Tom Collins, or shorter drinks like a Tommy's Margarita, multiple smaller cubes work well.

What can you use instead of sugar cubes in an Old Fashioned? ›

Old Fashioned Ingredients

Sugar cube – If you don't have sugar cubes, you can use 1 teaspoon granulated sugar and muddle it with the bitters and water. You can also use 1 teaspoon of simple syrup in place of both the sugar cube/granulated sugar and water.

How do you get sugar to dissolve for Old Fashioned? ›

Place the sugar cube in the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass and soak with 4-6 dashes (or drops) of Aromatic Bitters. Add a splash of water and muddle the sugar until it dissolves fully in the water and bitters.
