Understanding a Car's Fuse Box

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel.

Interior Fuse Box

The fuse box for the ABS is located in the engine compartment on the passenger's side. To open it, push the tab as shown. 253 to 256, or the diagram on the fuse box lid, which fuse or fuses control that component. Check those fuses first, but check all the fuses before deciding that a blown fuse is not the cause.

One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel. The fuse under the hood protects important engine components and accessories like battery, ECU and cooling fan. The internal fuse box protects the interior cabin components, including lights, radio and powered controls.

Each box has a different purpose. The engine compartment fuse box is made to protect certain engine components including the anti-lock brake pump, engine control unit, and cooling system while the interior fuse box is used to protect cabin area electrical elements.

On the passenger side, there is also a battery, and the fuse box is located nearby. You will often find tabs on the side of the fuse box cover that need to be pressed in to release them. While most vehicles have the battery in the engine bay, some may not.

Locate the instrument cluster fuse.

This is typically found inside the fuse box, which is located under the dash on the driver's side of the car.

If fuses keep blowing, there is a chance that it was replaced with a fuse of a higher or lower amperage than needed. You should be able to locate a diagram within your vehicle's manual that will show the required amperage rating for every fuse and each circuit that it is placed in.

What fuse is only on when the car is on? ›

A switched fuse, on the other hand, only has power when the car is turned on. The main difference between the two is that a constant fuse provides continuous power even when the car is not in use, while a switched fuse only provides power when the car is running.

Your brake components would still function as they should even if you remove the ABS fuse. However, the ABS won't be able to regulate your brakes without the fuse. Once the ABS is disabled, there's a higher tendency that your brakes will lock up.

In order to operate, your ABS system needs electricity. This is controlled by the anti-lock fuses and relay. The first fuse (a 10 amp fuse) must be good in order for electricity to flow to the relay, and the relay must function to provide power to the second fuse (a 30 amp fuse).

Where is the AC Fuse Located? The AC fuse on most HVAC systems is typically on the unit's control board. You'll normally find the board behind an access panel on the unit's lower compartment. While you sometimes have to unscrew areas to access the control board, others have clips.

The fuse that you're looking for will usually be the “lights” fuse, although it can differ from one vehicle to the next. The only way to know for sure is to locate a wiring diagram for the specific make, model, and year of your car, but checking out all of the fuses labeled “lights” or similar is usually good enough.

Check under the hood, under the dashboard, or near or in the glove compartment. Once you find the fuse box or boxes, remove the lid and check the diagram on the underside of the lid for a fuse labeled "dash lights" or just “lights.”
